Poker Hand Rankings: High Card to Royal Flush

That explains why players talk about their nut flush so much, and it represents how safely you can play this hand across many types of runouts. If there are four cards of a certain suit on the board, then their opponents can make a flush with a single hole card. Then, if your rival has a better suited card, your flush becomes second best as soon as the fifth suit card appears on the board. For example, 7-3 suited might look playable, but even if you hit a flush, you can lose a big pot to higher flushes. An example of a weak flush, where flushes are usually established with low and/or middle suit cards, can be quite deceptive. A bet for value plays well on most boards, as relatively few hands can beat you, and many subpar hands will call.

Poker Hand Promotion

The odds of being dealt one using all seven cards (two hole cards and five community cards) is approximately 0.028% or 1 in 3,571 hands. They sit two places behind straight flushes in the rankings. This is perhaps the most common mistake made with straight flush rankings, as the two hands are both very strong and uncommon. You need a straight (five cards in numerical order) and a flush (all five cards of the same suit). It is one of the most powerful hands that can be made in poker, only less valuable than a royal flush in the conventional rankings. Four Card Poker and other casino card games can be fun and entertaining, but keep in mind the player always loses in the long run.

Full houses become easier to make in short deck, while flushes are more difficult. 6+ or Short Deck Hold’em uses a stripped down deck of 36 cards, with all cards ranked 2-5 removed. For these reasons, Badugi is an exception to the poker hand ranking rules laid out above. Everything from Texas Hold’em to Draw poker, Stud, Omaha, and almost any other poker variant you can think of uses the poker hand rankings above. Any five-card hand that doesn’t qualify in any 4 flush poker of the above categories is known as a high-card hand. As you would expected, a pair is the name for two of the same ranking card.

Defending only with flushes

Understanding poker hand rankings is the foundation of the game, helping you instantly recognise which card combinations win and why. High card hands that differ by suit alone, such as 10♣ 8♠ 7♠ 6♥ 4♦ and 10♦ 8♦ 7♠ 6♣ 4♣, are of equal rank. One-pair hands that differ by suit alone, such as 8♠ 8♦ 10♥ 6♣ 5♠ and 8♥ 8♣ 10♣ 6♠ 5♣, are of equal rank. One pair, or simply a pair, is a hand that contains two cards of one rank and three cards of three other ranks (the kickers), such as 4♥ 4♠ K♠ 10♦ 5♠ ("one pair, fours" or a "pair of fours").

• With all five community cards on the board, you have a 0.0279% chance of making a straight flush in Texas Hold’em (3,589.6-to-1).
• Play aggressively early, but don’t stack off lightly if action heats up on coordinated boards where straights or flushes are possible.
• The kicker rule is what trips up new players.
• This ensures that you will always have flushes in your range on the turn regardless of how the flop played out.
